Day 8. Port Augusta - Rawnsley Park (Hawker) rain, rain, Rain 19/05/2015

Went to bed last night just as a storm came through Port Augusta, with continuos thunder, lightening and heavy rain.  So surprised to wake this morning to bright sunshine and clear blue skies.
Departed the park about 9 am for our journey towards Quorn where we stopped for a morning cuppa in a cafe that previously had been a very important building in Quorn.  It was an emporium that had sold everything from ladies shoes, hats, dresses etc.  menswear,  manchester, groceries and many other things.  The cashier lines across the ceiling were still visible and the shop was full of beautiful old counters.
We then stopped at the old railway station of Quorn that has a fascinating history in the rail history of South Australia.  On Anzac Day they had a display of the very train that General McArthur rode on when he declared to Australia  those very famous words "I will be back".  Also housed  there were troop carriages that transported our soldiers to Darwin during WW11 plus a very historical carriage that was fired upon by two Turkish men just before the Gallipoli invasion in 1915. The carriage was full of picnickers from Broken Hill and four people lost their lives.
We arrived at Rawnsley Park about 12.30 pm. and after setting up and having lunch we did our first hike close to the caravan park.  We hiked through creek beds to Kangaroo Flat lookout.  Only a short hike - just warming up for future hikes!
We have great site overlooking Rawnsley Bluff and gathered some wood for a fire.
Made a booking for a flight over the ranges tomorrow morning where we will  see so much more of these beautiful ranges.

The old emporium at Quorn - very historic building.

A typical cottage in Quorn township.
