Day 57. Kununurra to The Bungle Bungles 07/07/2015

Late start today as we only had to travel around 260 kms to the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park close to the Purnululu National Park.
Before we left we gave the Caldinda another quick wash to clean off the dust and bat droppings. Those millions of bats that we saw heading out to the crops each night also make a return trip early the following morning. By the direct hits made on our van it was the main target for their early morning poop.
Wendy had a discussion with a fellow camper before we departed and she informed us that many of the aboriginals in Kununurra came in from the bush in the last 10 years and her job was to assist them finding accommodation and then teaching them how to maintain their property. Some respond, many don’t. Some job. It would be almost impossible to retrain these people to have any respect for the whitepella’s ways.
We turned on to the Great Northern Hwy some 40 kms out of Kununurra and headed, can you believe SOUTH. The Highway was excellent with again the magnificent views of Mountain Ranges and rock formations. Plenty of single lane bridges over dry creek beds and traffic slowed as the many vans on the road were caught behind a slow van driven by a grey nomad. Annoying isn’t it.
More of the beautiful yellow bush flower that we now understand is Kapoc. This flower is widespread in the Kimberley’s and beyond, and it’s name has had us wondering since we first saw it. Thanks Dillon.
A quick stop for a coffee break at Doon Doon roadhouse and we arrived at the park around lunchtime. All the powered sites were taken up and we were directed to the free camping area that isn’t too bad. As the day wore on more and more camps set up around us. Not much else to report except that happy hour is going to start early and a video may be the order of the night.

Up early tomorrow for our day tour of the Bungle Bungles.

The roads are excellent and the views change every few kilometres.
Plenty of vans but all driving very sensibly.
Our site at the Bungle Bungle caravan park. Pretty dusty but plenty of space.
