Day 64. Broome. Getting Acqainted. 14/07/2015

Had a little sleep in this morning but awoke to quite strong winds and the washing dried in about half an hour! Went to the town centre to stroll around the shops. A very interesting collection of shops and we found a couple of 'tucked away' arcades that were a revelation. There are a number of shops selling the beautiful pearls and in the Cygnet Bay Pearl shop we spied a cabinet displaying the largest finest quality round pearl grown at the Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm. It is is white/pink in colour, 22.24 mm diameter and weighs 15.75 grams. It is very beautiful but as there was no price ticket on it, we can only assume it is priceless!
We came across the feature of the town, the bronze statues of the founding Fathers of the Pearl Industry and no doubt we will hear more of the story and see the exhibits concerning the pearling industry here in Broome when we visit the Pearl Luggers exhibition and the Museum.
We then drove a little distance out of the town centre and found the Town Beach where the locals swim and enjoy the surroundings, a very lovely estate that had many beautiful homes with magnificent tropical gardens.
Returned to camp to have a late lunch and catch up on some emails etc. then drove on to Cable Beach to have our Happy Hour and to see the beautiful sunset and the Camels marching across the beach as they do each night.
.
The centre of town was small but interesting shopping centre.
Pretty quiet on the streets. Mind you it was 33 deg.
Entrance to Chinatown.
Some information on the Chinese influence on the pearl industry.
This beautiful fine quality pearl is the largest in the world.
Monuments to the founders of the pearl industry in Broome.
Relaxing drinkies on the beach before sunset.
The camel train heading home at sunset.
