John woke early this morning to the sounds of hundreds of Finches in the trees above our caravan so we got going quite early for breakfast and then a very quick pack up, a farewell to Nellie, and we were heading out to the highway again to travel to Fitzroy Crossing. Only 180 kms to go and the scenery was lovely. Straight sections then all of a sudden undulating hills with rocky outcrops on either side of the road. Saw large herds of cattle grazing. The cattle stations here are huge and cover thousands of hectares with very little fencing to keep the cattle confined so, consequently, they are either beside the highway or crossing over in front of the car, so when driving you have to be constantly alert.
Arrived in Fitzroy Crossing and were settled in our site by 11.30 a.m. Caught up with Rod, Jude, Don and Heather who had arrived a day earlier than us. We were greeted by the campers on the very next site, and to my surprise and amazement it was cousin Neil and his wife Sue. Could not believe that they were here, and after spending some time with them found out that they too had camped at Mary Pool last night and we did not see each other. They have been travelling all the same roads, staying in some different parks as they have their little dog Missy with them, but are also heading to Broome to spend some time with our cousin Keith. What a reunion that will be. To think that we are all Victorians and will be meeting up in Broome in a few days.
Had lunch then drove in to look at the town. Well, that was a quick visit as there was nothing to see but Aboriginals everywhere and it was very confronting. We got fuel and some groceries then hightailed it out of there. Drove down to the Geike Gorge to enquire about booking a cruise tomorrow. Could not pre-book but were assured we would get seats on the boat tomorrow at 4 pm. Fitzroy Crossing is a desolate place and not an area that is suitable for too long a stay. Came back to the park and later had Happy Hour and a take-away Barra Dinner with everybody.
Will be a quiet day tomorrow before taking the cruise later in the afternoon.
