Our first really warm night when we slept with only a sheet and the air conditioner cooling Calinda. We awoke among the gum trees to beautiful blue sunny skies and a gentle breeze that was conducive to getting some laundry done and on the line early after which we went to see the Barramundi feeding show. The large lily covered billabong is home to about 8 Barra, turtles, and a variety of fish . Those who wished, were invited to feed the Barra who snapped the bait from the hand with great speed. Interestingly, Barramundi lay 32,000 eggs during the spawning season. These 8 Barra have a very pretty home indeed.
After lunch in the shade of the lovely trees surrounding our site, we headed off to the nearby Bitter Springs ( so named because of the bitter taste of the mineral rich water). Armed with our "noodles" and thongs, we climbed down into the springs and floated downstream with the gentle current, enjoying the serenity and lush scenery as we passed by. Before long we came to a bridge, climbed up a ladder and walked back along the pretty bush track to the beginning, ready to do it all again and again! Bitter Springs is filled with deep turquoise crystal clear water that is lined with palms and paperbacks. It was the most amazing experience and one that is quite unique. The Bitter Springs are part of the remote Elsey Station that in 1908 was given the name of Never Never Land . There has been an iconic novel written titled "We of the Never Never" which has also been made into a film. There are millions of anthills in the area and some of them have been there for centuries.
Had dinner tonight at the restaurant in the park. We were extremely disappointed in our meals as not only did they not appear for 2 hrs after ordering them, they were not good value for money. The management must have been embarrassed by the delay and offered us a free drink and dessert of our choice. However, the live music, presented by a one man band was excellent and he had us singing and "groovin" along with him.
