A lovely fresh morning greeted us after another very warm night. A quick visit to the local store to get some provisions and to post some postcards to the family. Expecting a temperature in the low 30's today as we set off for our last day in the Litchfield National Park with the intention of going to see the Florence Falls. We were not disappointed on reaching the falls. Our first vision was from a very high viewing platform where we could appreciate the amazing monsoon forest surrounding the falls. We then had to descend 135 steps down into the gorge by way of a very well constructed staircase. The falls were spectacular and there was a large number of people already in the pool when we got there. Some excitement before we entered the water as we saw a small green tree snake eating a frog and then, just as I was about to put my clothes down on the rocks, a very thin brown rock snake appeared. Needless to say, I moved away very quickly!
The water was beautiful and it was so wonderful to just float around enjoying the scenery.
We then had to climb back up the 135 steps to reach the car park before we could select a spot to have our picnic lunch. Found a beautiful area to sit and enjoy our lunch by the stream that was cascading over the rock formations. We spotted a river goanna sunning itself on a grassy bank opposite us. It was quite a size so we were pleased that we didn't have to share the grassy bank with the goanna. This particular species of goanna just forages around river banks for its food and does not go on open land.
After returning to the caravan park we just had a lazy afternoon reading and snoozing after our energetic morning activity.
Just before dinner, we heard the noise of a large number of feeding birds. On investigation we found Jim the owner of the park feeding the Red Collared Lorakeets (they actually had feathers of many bright colours) a powdered milk drink that contained honey. These beautiful birds feed on the nectar of flowering gums.
